JULY 27. 1966 PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS Gala Second Act' Begins Tonight Thousands See Parade of Beauties Yesterday Thousands of spectators from all parts of North Caro lina lined- the streets of More head City yesterday after noon as the contestants in ' the Miss North Carolina Pa geant passed in review. Leading the parade was the color guard from Guard Company, MP Battalion, Camp Lejeune, consist ing of Sergeants Ernest Berry, George Foy, Timothy J. Buckley and Jessie K. McCumbec. McCum bee is a Tar Heel from Belmont. The 100 piece band from the 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, was authorized to appear by Major General Burger, commanding gen 1 rral of Camp Lejeune. The band followed the car in which Miss America, Sharon Kayc Ritchie, was riding. Following the band was the car of Miss North Carolina, Faye Ar nold. The official car followed, carrying Marion Mills, parade chairman, P. H. Geer Jr., Floyd Chadwitk and Luther Lewis, Morc liead City Jaycees. Car Thief Gets Roads Sentence Roberl Fagan, 20, Negro escapee who stole Mrs. Dan Walker's car Tuesday, was sentenced to two and a half years on the roads at New Bern yesterday. ' Fagan will now be returned to Morehead City where he will be tried on the car theft charge. The stolen car. a 1958 Oldsmo bile. was wrecked by Fagan, who was picked up by New Bern police at 6:02 p.m. Tuesday. At New Bern, Fagan was tried for speeding in excess of 100 milea an hour, careless and reckless driv ing. and possession of stolen prop-, crty. He will also be tried by the state for prison-break, reported Sheriff Hugh Salter Fagan took Mrs. Wal ker's ear at about 1 p.m. Tuesday. It was parked by the commercial fisberie* building. Camp Glenn, where Mrs. Walker works. Fagan was a member of the New port prison gang working on the road near the commercial fisheries building. Beaufort Board ToHeef Aug.13 I The Beaufort town board will meet in special session at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, to consider ton ing a recently-annexed portion of the town as residential. The area involved it a section of Front Street east of the Hugh Hill water lot, extending eastward slightly more than a block, and a small portion of land on Ann Street. The area waa annexed to the town several years ago on petition by the property owners. After an nexation, however, the area was never toned. Ten finalists not to be an nounced prior to this performance. 300 Greet National, State Beauties at Landing Field A crowd of 300 people from all over the county were at the Bcau fort-Morchead airport Wednesday afternoon to welcome Miss North Carolina, Fayc Arnold, ind Miu America. Sharon Kayc Ritchie, two of the judges for the Miu NArth Carolina Pageant. The plane was 50 minutes late, due to a thunderstorm. Mis#<flitchic was presented the fcey to Morchead City by Mayor George Dill Jr., who was accom panied by hi* daughter, Susan. Others on the welcoming com mittee were Luther Lewis, Dr. Russell Outlaw. Marion Mills. L. E. Kelly, all of the Morchead City Jaycccs; Mayor C. T. Lewis, Beau fort, Danforth Hill, president of the Beaufort Jaycccs. and Lynnc Rich ardson. Miss Morehead City, who la official pageant hostess. Also on the plane were Joy Lambert, Miu Raleigh, and Norma Cone, Miu Durham Miu Lambert ia the daughter of Maj. and Mrs Dava Lambert. Major Lambert la with Um State Highway Patrol. Miss Cone is the daughter of Mr. and Mra. J. C. Cone, 180C Pal mer St. She won the Durham title over a field of 19 contestant*. Pilot of the Piedmont plane which brought the lovelie* here was W W. Cox, Winston-Salem Co-pilot waa Joe Helsebach, Wal nut Cove, and the puraer, Max Tatum, Raleigh. Miss Arnold and Miss Ritchie were taken to Morehead City in convertibles tfiauffeured by Mr. Mills and Mr. Kelly. They were escorted in a Bean fort police car driven by Assistant Police Chief Carlton Garner and In a Morehead City police car driv en by Lt. Carl Bunch. In This Issue Pictures of Those 41 Beautiful Girls Pageant Program Chamber Board Hears Report On Membership Forty-four firms and individuals have signed up for membership in the Beaufort Chamber of Com meree, directors were told at their meeting Tuesday night at the ehambcr office. Miss Pat Springlc. chamber sec retary. says the campaign will con tinue through Aug. 1. Directors split up names on a list of potential members. To those listed they will make personal ap peals. The directors voted to continue the courtesy nickel plan as long as the merchants sec fit. Town com missioners Gerald Hill and William Hoy Hamilton said they would ask for more cooperation from the po lice in reference to the program. The directors approved sending a letter to Maynard Hicks endors ing the plan to repair tho. North River Bridge. Ronald Earl Mason announced that the sign for the launching ramp was to be put up Wednesday. It cost the chamber $25. Joy Boy Springs Leak, Beached A quick beaching of the Camp Sea Gull boat, Joy Boy. yesterday morning averted possible tragedy. The Joy Boy, with about 30 boys aboard, was headed out Beaufort Inlet when she sprang a leak and started to settle forward. The skip per quickly maneuvered the boat to the west side of the slip at Fort Macon Coast Guard Station and ran her ashore. There Coast Guardsmen pumped the water out, the boys were put ashore and the boat taken to the Morchcad City Yacht Basin where it was hauled up on the ways. It was reported that a plank had cither sprung off or was knocked off the keel of the boat The Joy Boy is one of two boats operated out of Morchcad City by Camp Sea Gull. The camp's home base is at Arapihoe. The parcel pott mail truck com ing into Morchcad City Wednesday broke down at Havelock and wa* two hours late In arriving. ? Beauty and talent will walk hand in hand tonight as the second performance of the Miss North Carolina Pageant begins at 8 p.m. at the Carolina race track, west of More head City. Contestants, in three groups, will appear in swim suits, evening gowns and present their talents. Tomorrow afternoon's performance at 2:30 p.m. will offer more of the same, and the finals tomorrow night at 8 will feature the 10 finalists in bathing suits, evening gowns and talent. Beaufort, was eon ducted at 2 p m. yesterday in Ann Street Methodist Church, Beaufort. Mr Stephens, well-known archi tect died at 5:15 Tuesday morn ing at the Inlet Inn after a long illness. Surviving besides his daughter. Mrs. Anna V. Picrson. ? hi, son Robert H. Stephen. New Bern; a sister, Miss Laura G. phens, Beaufort, and two grand children. The Kcv. J. D.
